  Kodiac Mystique, CGC ... "Kodie"

Kodie would be the one that started it all. Ever since I was a little girl I wanted a Husky. When I started baby-sitting, I started to save money for the purchase of one. I even wrote breeders and did all the necessary homework. But then one morning I came home from baby-sitting all night and low and behold there was this Siberian puppy asleep in my bathroom. A co-worker of my father's two sons decided to buy this Siberian puppy at a local pet store on the spur of the moment and neglecting to ask dad!!! Their dad hit the ceiling . Since pet shops don't allow returns, the puppy was heading to the shelter the morning after she found her "new home." Fortunately for Kodie, the father did remember that I had been wanting a husky...the rest is history. I feel in love with her the moment I saw her.

My dream was to have a Siberian Husky to compete in obedience competitions (fortunately no one at this time had told me the old myth- it wasn't possible.) So as soon as she walked in the door we started working towards that goal. And for the next almost two years, I trained her toward her novice title. The loss of an obedience instructor and not really having any where to go set us back tremendously. However the biggest set back that almost ruined her, was the "alpha wolf" training methods. This technique is dangerous to the dog as well as to the person especially if you have a very dominant dog like Kodie (check out
CW Meisterfeld's web site for must read books and info on this subject.) Because of this training and her "puppy mill" breeding, Kodie has a very a typical Siberian temperament. She's very dominant and as a young pup had aggressive tendencies toward humans. Fortunately, with allot of work she has over come a lot of her problems. But not with out literally blood, sweat, and tears.

Kodie loves to visit preschools and daycares. She is also a wonderful babysitter to any child that she's around. She very patient and gentle and love the playground : ) Last year she was entered in an obedience trial and would have tied for first if it had not been for those stays : ) I still hope to put a CD on her if I ever get myself in gear and the time to do it. Kodie is an example of what you can do to a dog without proper training and breeding and how you can also overcome it with love and understanding. Don't give up easily on a dog with out some effort and remember they are our friends not slaves. Also, breed responsibly don't bring any more Kodies into the world. And make an effort to educate yourselves in every faucet of dog owning and the breed before you buy. And never forget the lessons that special friends like Kodie and teach us.
